Excerpt from Mr. Adnan Oktar's Live Interview on Samsun Aks TV and TV Kayseri (23 June 2010)
ADNAN OKTAR: "How should a male Muslim dress these days? If our Prophet (saas) were alive today, how would he dress? I mean, would he wear robes and turbans, or else a suit like you? Is wearing a turban really a part of the Sunna? This is a very important issue. People who look at Islam in a prejudiced manner see Muslims wearing robes and turbans and the women all covered up in chadors, in short, in their eyes, they see Muslims as a social community with no conception of how to dress. With my deepest respects. From Sezer Şen." "No conception of how to dress?" Muslims know very well how to dress. They are the best, highest-quality people in the world. But if there is a woman all covered up in chador that means she understands how to dress very well. They cannot say that they have no conception of how to dress, in fact, the full covering is excellent clothing. The robe and turban are excellent clothes. But a suit is also an excellent clothing. There is no such thing. For instance, a young Jew came here the other day, very elegant and looking very good. He wore a robe and a turban and came here. I used to wear robes and turbans myself. The robe and turban are excellent clothes. But one can't really wear them on the streets, outside, of course. But one can wear that when worshiping at home if one likes. "If our Prophet (saas) were still alive?" But we need to avoid notoriety, and that might lead to notoriety. If someone wears a robe and turban on the outside, that is going to attract attention. It might cause hypocrisy and it might cause fame. I am not saying that off the top of my head, but from Hüseyin Hilmi Işık's book explaining the principles of Islam. See that he is the bastion of the Ahl Al-Sunni belief. I not saying this from my head, I am a muqallid, I just am just citing it from there. Hüseyin Hilmi Işık says, "We must avoid notoriety." May he rest in peace. That is why he says it is inappropriate to move around on the outside wearing robes and turbans, insha'Allah. He says we must avoid notoriety. But a suit is fine. One must not place limits on clothing. One can wear a headscarf. One can wear a turban. One can leave one's head uncovered . For instance, here we have a sister. Her father is a devout man, her sister covers her head but she does not. I do love her sister very much, but I also love her as well. Both of them are for me, immaculate, highly mannered, perfect Muslims. Their father is also a perfect Muslim.. I mean I do not judge people according to a special form, according to their clothing and appearances. They are all valuable people, insha'Allah. If I see a woman covered up that pleases me. Masha'Allah, I say. My sister for example, dresses spotlessly in a very modern way, and I again say Masha'Allah. She is an immaculate person, a believer who fears Allah. But one should not be so stiff about this subject, I mean about the robe and the turban .. There may be a misinformation about this.. Our Prophet (saas) wore them in his day, but he wore a robe from Byzantium. Polytheists also wore turbans in those days. Jews wore turbans and our Prophet (saas) wore a turban. Everyone did so. The turban was not something unique to Muslims. Christians also wore robes, and Jews and everyone. Look at pictures from those times, pictures from the past, and you will see they are all more or less the same, and you cannot distinguish Christian clothes from Jewish clothes. There are many Christian groups, as you know. They shorten their moustaches and let their beards grow. That applies to Muslims, too, they may shorten their moustaches and let their beards grow. One might like it, want to do it and act on it. But to call someone without a beard not a Muslim, or a sinner, or saying that they can't perform prayers following him. These assumptions are all wrong, there is no question of that. This is all a huge exaggeration. But someone with a beard is also very excellent, and that is referred to in the Qur'an. That is because the Prophet Aaron (as) says not to hold him by his hair or beard. The hair can also be allowed to grow. For instance our Prophet (saas) had long hair, plaited on either side. Two plaits on either side. It was quite long. Our Prophet's (saas) hair was pitch black. Now if someone stands up and says "the hair should not be allowed to grow," then that would be very wrong, insha'Allah. But our prophet's (saas) hair sometimes reached his neck, he cut it short. And at other times he let it grow long, didn't he? He wore a pleasant, scented oil on his head and combed his hair. Then when his beard grew long he cut it short again.
Let me say I have a huge respect and love for women who cover themselves up entirely. Let nobody misunderstand, I am quite delighted by it. For instance Mehmet Talu, he wears a robe and comes and visits. For instance recently when we had dinner on the boat, he came by and sat next to me, didn't he? He sat on my left. I feel a deep affection for him for Allah's approval. He recited a fine dining prayer there. He is like an older brother I feel proud of having and someone I admire very much. He is a very worthy person. But for instance, Mehmet Şevket Eygi has a very modest Ottoman-type moustache and no beard. He is also very precious to me. There is no difference between them for me. Mehmet Talu and Mehmet Şevket Eygi are the same for me. I do not say that one is worthier than the other. Both are very sincere, immaculate Muslims. I make no distinction in between them because of how they dress. One dresses like an Ottoman gentleman. Mehmet Şevket Eygi. He is excellent and high quality and was very elegant that day, with his shoes and clothes and everything. He is a very courteous, pure individual. He is very humble, but still a real Ottoman gentleman, insha'Allah. May Allah grant him a long life. He is a really fine person with his language and behavior and everything. Mehmet Talu is also luminous with his language and speech. He knows I like Mahmud Hodja very much. He said "I went by him before I came here and told him that I was coming here," he said. "He told me to go and sent his greetings," he said. I then asked for my deepest respects and my greetings to be extended to him. Insha'Allah you will enable us to meet together again. I receive his prayers from time to time. That is very good, masha'Allah.
