Excerpt from Mr. Adnan Oktar's Live Interview on Harun Yahya TV dated August 11th, 2010
Adnan Oktar: But in that period, for instance you free them and that person who was a slave becomes free. Three people go and kidnap the free man and sell him as a slave in another place and he becomes a slave again. He becomes free again when someone else frees him. This time they kidnap him in a war. For example, they confiscate him in the war and he becomes a slave again. After the war ends, three or five people buy him and make him free again. He then gets kidnapped again and becomes a slave once more. It was such a period. It was such a time insha'Allah.
But when concubines or slaves came to Muslims, they were already treated as free. They ate the same food, sat at the same table and received the same respect. They wore the same outfit. They are very comfortable. Their situation is not even remotely close to that of a classic slave. They go where ever they want and talk however they want; they live very comfortably in the complete sense of the word.
It only meant Muslims looking after him or her. In that time.. I mean only the name was slave in that time. Slavery was already abolished when with Muslims.
Because.. How is slavery like among the unbelievers? They beat up and slander him. They give him the worst food and make him work at the worst conditions and do not trust his word or show any respect to him. Right? They force him or her to engage in illegitimate relations. In Islam, the ruling of all these are explained, they are all forbidden by religion. They make them eat what they eat, drink that they drink. I mean they are completely free. They are even more than free. Even the free cannot live in such comfort. They lived in better conditions than the free. Therefore, slavery was abolished with Islam. That is because.. what is meant by the word slave, what comes to our mind when we say "slave"? A person who is oppressed, forced, whose freedom is taken away, who is hurt and who is not respected comes to my mind.
All of these were abolished. Complete respect, honor, love and compassion came instead. And perfect living conditions came. Therefore, you know they say that there is slavery in Islam. But slavery was completely abolished when Islam came. It is the same whether you free him or not. For example, there are "free slaves." It is the same. They are completely free. They live perfectly. They wear the best clothes and eat the best food. They live with Muslims insha'Allah. Therefore, women used to come and dedicate themselves to Hazrat Hasan (ra) and Hazrat Husain (ra) and also to our Prophet(saas) as well.
They give themselves away. They say, "I am yours." They say, "You are my guardian." There is a marriage agreement. Some concubines were like that. And some were truly concubines, who came as a result of a war. But only the name is concubine; in practice they wore the best jewelry, ate the best food and worn the best clothes. Right? When you say "concubine"; our mothers were glamorously beautiful. This was being misunderstood that is why I wanted like to correct that.
Oktar Babuna: Insha'Allah master.
Adnan Oktar:Insha'Allah. At that time, they also became concubines with their own free will. They are called "free concubines." The important thing there is the feeling of love and compassion for everyone. For example, a carrier comes to our Prophet (saas). In the table, he sits on the right of our Prophet (saas) and on the other side there are many brothers whose value are not recognized in society. In fact every profession is essential. Let's assume a slave of someone or the doorman of someone or a waiting man or a field worker is sitting on the left. They all sit cross-legged. The commanders of our Prophet (saas) were a little further and for example the richest person of that city is even a little further. The table is in the middle and everybody ate together.
What do they do when performing salat (prayer)? They are shoulder to shoulder and next to one another. The commander, the worker, the richest person in the city, next to him a poor man but they are all together. They eat the same food. For example, he will dress him as he would like himself. A clothe that he himself does not like is not appropriate. The Qur'an, Almighty Allah does not accept it. He will dress him with the clothes he likes. He will feed him with the food he enjoys. There is something known by all people, for instance they bring someone who is poor and the man gives away the things that he does not eat so that they are not left over. This is not acceptable. He will feed him with the food he likes the most. This was like this in Islam. They used to say that slavery was abolished gradually in Islam; with the verses commanding people to free a slave as a penalty for that crime.
There is a verse in the Qur'an. For example, Allah says: "it will be the recompense for that if you free four slaves" It is said that slavery ended slowly through such freeing of the slaves. The system of slavery ended as soon as Islam came. It ended completely, fundamentally. A slave person was sitting crossing his legs. He can go to Yemen and to wherever he'd like. He is completely free. Of course.. He performs his prayers. He sits with the Prophet (saas) and the Companions and the leading people of the city at the same table. How is he a slave now? The slaves they used to tell us were not like that. There is a cliff between the slaves of the unbelievers and the slaves of Islam. They are gents in one and slaves in the other. Slaves in Islam are like gents. It is like that. Only the name was slave. But slavery was abolished. They dressed very clean and stylish clothes. Their opinions were valued. For example, Bilal Habashi was our Prophet (saas)'s slave. When we say Bilal Habashi, one feels out of breath, right? He was someone whom Muslims love with compassion. He was very much respected. Who knows what comes to people's mind when one says "slave"? Bilal Habashi was dressing very stylishly. He was eating the best food. He was staying at the best house. And he was completely free. He went to wherever he wanted to. Of course.. Many things in Islam might be known wrongly so it is useful to explain these once in a while.
Oktar Babuna:Insha'Allah master yes. Masha'Allah.
