If threatened with death, a Muslim can say that he is not a Muslim. I mean if it is certain that he will be killed, he can for instance say that he is a Christian, or say that he is an atheist. For instance a man says "if you do not declare that you are an atheist then I will shoot you down" and there is no sign to state that he is just joking; there he can say this. There is a verse related to that in the Qur'an. I mean under coercion this can be said. But as soon as he leaves that environment he instantly says; "My Lord I was in trouble, I repent" and that would be invalid in any case. If one is in such a trouble that is natural; any other method would not do.  This can happen abroad as well, may Allah forbid, one could fall into the hands of the unbelievers and the man asks "what are you?" How is he going to be saved? He says whatever it is that could save him at that moment and save himself. Insha'Allah. Because after he saves himself he will continue to serve Islam, he wouldn't be abandoning Islam just by saying that momentarily anyway.   On the contrary, his enthusiasm would increase, his faith would increase and he would be embracing the Qur'an and Islam more tightly.
